In 2024 the NJ state legislature passed the Freedom to Read act which gave protections to librarians and ceased to end book bans.

Over 4800 libraries have established themselves as "book sanctuaries" in an effort to stop book censorship.

This library program issues library cards nationwide from regional libraries in order to give electronic access to digital collections of banned books in the U.S.

Typically (but not always) held during the last week of September, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.

"Book banning is increasingly common in US schools. While most studies focus on centralized, state-sponsored censorship, individuals such as parents and local organizations have participated in this recent wave of banning. Furthermore, we analyze the local contexts that predict bans and evaluate how interest changes after books are banned. In sum, we suggest that this wave of book bans is best understood as a form of political action in increasingly contested local contexts rather than as a means of effective censorship."
