The Monmouth University Sustainability Advisory Council (SAC) is an interdisciplinary working group comprised of students, faculty, staff and administrators that promotes environmental awareness and encourages the development of an environmentally responsible and sustainable campus community in its operations, education, research, outreach and services. The SAC researches, proposes and recommends sustainable policies and initiatives in support of the university's sustainability goals. It also reviews current campus practices, policies and procedures and recommends changes as needed.

The Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute (UCI), established in 2005, is one of five Centers of Distinction on campus. The mission of the institute is "to serve Monmouth University and the public as a forum for research, education, and collaboration in the development and implementation of science-based policies and programs that support stewardship of healthy, productive, and resilient coastal ecosystems and communities."
The UCI examines interactions between humans and the coastal and ocean environment with a focus upon sustainable development along New Jersey's coasts and watersheds, and seeks to foster collaboration among citizens, watershed and community organizations, governmental agencies, businesses, the scientific community and other parties interested in coastal and watershed management, conservation and restoration.
Each year, the UCI manages signature events like student-faculty research projects and lectures by distinguished scholars and professionals.
Students interested in joining the Peace Corps may receive advice and support from the Monmouth University Peace Corps Volunteer Preparation Program (PCVPP), which prepares them to join after graduation. The PCVPP is based upon a formal cooperative agreement between Monmouth University and the Peace Corps, and is the first and only such program in New Jersey.
There are multiple assignment options available once a student is accepted to the Peace Corps, including environmental work:
"Volunteers lead grassroots efforts in their communities to protect the environment and strengthen understanding of environmental issues. They teach environmental awareness in elementary and secondary schools and to youth groups and community organizations, empowering communities to make their own decisions about how to protect and conserve the local environment. Volunteers also address environmental degradation by promoting sustainable use of natural resources."

In January 2009, Monmouth University entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The purpose of the MOU is to document MU's commitment as an environmental steward that pledges to reduce its carbon footprint and generally contribute to a better environment by partnering with the EPA.
Monmouth University is the first independent university in New Jersey to sign this type of comprehensive green operation agreement with the EPA.
Monmouth University recognizes the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) program requirements for outreach and involvement, data collection, and reporting, and will strive to become a recognized leader and a candidate for EPA environmental stewardship awards.
