Medieval Manuscript Research Guide (Advanced): Book Repair Images

Repair by the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, Philadelphia

The following images document the repair of a Shakespeare volume, performed by the Conservation Center in Philadelphia. This Shakespeare volume was published in London by Bathurst in 1778, and was in the provenence of the Seymour family who owned Ballymore Castle, County Galway, Ireland until the early 20th century. The volume represented below bears the inscription of Walter Seymour. All ten volumes emerge from the hand-press period, when paper was handmade by London craftsmen. It, along with nine other volumes, belongs to Monmouth Univesity Library's rare book collection.
